Can you give CBD to pets?

1 Minute Read

The idea of giving your pet CBD may be surprising, but it's used by many owners to solve everyday pet problems.

What exactly is CBD?

Cannabidiol (CBD) is a compound that naturally occurs in Cannabis. It is usually extracted from Hemp as it contains 0.3% or less of THC. CBD and THC are two different compounds with different effects, only THC gets you “high”, and is usually extracted from Marjuana.

What does CBD do to Pets?

Similar to humans, dog have an Endocannabinoid System (ECS) which interacts with cannabinoids. The ECS works towards homeostasis, striving for balance in the body.

How can CBD help Pets?

It's hard to give a dog a Placebo Effect, and American pet owners are reported to be using CBD products in huge numbers for pet anxiety, anti-inflammation, cardiovascular health, pain management and epilepsy.

Possible side effects in Pets may be:

  • Dry mouth
  • Lowered blood pressure

These side effects may occur when there is a high dosage of CBD consumed.

What to look out for when shopping for CBD pet products:

  • VMD authorisation - it is illegal to sell CBD pet products in the UK without this

Make sure:

  • Double check it is actually a CBD product manufactured for dogs/pets.
  • Don’t necessarily go for the cheapest options.
  • Check the lab reports!
