What’s the difference between CBD and THC?

Since CBD became widely available, consumers are becoming increasingly curious about the difference between CBD and THC, and what they each do.

What’s the difference between CBD and THC?

Cannabis and Hemp are both plants that come from the plant species Cannabis Sativa. Despite them being from one species, they have some major differences. Hemp tends to produce around twice as much CBD as Cannabis. This means that technically CBD can be extracted from either, however, Hemp generally has less than 0.3% THC whereas Cannabis can have up to 25% THC. THC is still illegal in the UK and any trace of it in a retail product would make that product illegal. That being said, regulatory trends indicate that recreational THC may be legalised in the UK between 2023-2025.

Does CBD get you high?

Lets kick this off by saying Cannabidiol (CBD) is psychoactive but isn’t intoxicating. That means that it has effects on the brain and body but doesn’t get you ‘high’. Delta 9 tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) on the other hand, does get you “high”. The reason you experience a sense of euphoria from THC is due to THC activating both CB1 and CB2 receptors in the body's endocannabinoid system. Conversely CBD interacts with the TRPV1 Receptors which are involved in regulating pain, body temperature, and inflammation. CBD is able to interfere with the binding of THC and may consequently dampen the psychoactive effects of THC.

With CBD there is still a lot more research to be done, however, there have been a lack of side effects found from using CBD. Do make sure to check with your doctor if CBD is safe to use in conjunction with any other medications taken.

What are the side effects of THC?

THC produces temporary side effects, like:

  • increased heart rate

  • dry mouth
  • red eyes
  • slower reaction times

Overall, neither CBD or THC have been found to be fatal.
